Cllr Zack Ali, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Crawley, has slammed the latest Spending Review as a “tax bombshell waiting to go off”, accusing the Labour government of hiding the truth from working people.
“Labour promised not to raise taxes on working people. They broke that promise,” Zack said. “Now, this Spending Review makes one thing clear: more tax rises are on the way.”
Zack criticised the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, for failing to get a grip on public finances and instead relying on higher spending and borrowing.
“Labour’s answer to every problem is the same, spend more today and worry about the cost tomorrow. But working families in Crawley don’t have that luxury. While they’re cutting back, Labour is writing cheques the country can’t afford.”
The Spending Review increased day-to-day NHS spending and departmental budgets but failed to spell out how this will be paid for in future years. Experts now expect council tax and other levies to rise again in the Autumn.
“We’re already seeing the warning signs here locally, council tax up, income growth down, and talk of new tax hikes to come. Rachel Reeves says one thing in the studio and does another in the Budget. People in Crawley aren’t stupid – they know when they’re being taken for a ride.”
Zack also warned that Labour’s so-called ‘Jobs Tax’ was hurting local businesses and pushing up costs at the worst possible time.
“Labour’s tax rises are hitting our high streets, our small businesses, and the people who get up early and work hard. Crawley deserves better.”
